Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) small bronze tiger figurine by Izumi Seijo II (1865-1937), Paris World Expo Gold Medal-winning sculptor, with original (signed) fitted box and carved wooden base. This is a highly artistic masterpiece that fully demonstrates Izumi Seijo''s sophisticated techniques. ‘Seijo’ stamp on the belly. 12cm high x 23cm wide x 10cm deep (including base), weight (with box) 1.9kg.
 
Excellent condition.
 
Izumi Seijo II studied under his father, Seijo I, a former Aizu samurai and carver. He was a noted bronze caster who lived in Tokyo and is listed as a member of the Tokyo Sculptures Association and the Japan Metalwork Association. He was also a permanent committee member of the Tokyo Chukinkai (The Tokyo Cast Metalworkers Association). Izumi Seijo began exhibiting in around 1895 and wone a prize in the Paris Exposition of 1900 one of his sculptures (a bronze hen and rooster) is included in the Imperial collection.
