A fine fruitwood carved side table of high decorative quality. The rectangular top is carved with dense foliate and geometric ornament within a bordered field, above a continuous carved apron, raised on bobbin-turned legs with carved block details and bun feet.
A later hand-written label to the underside records a local attribution linking the table to Locking Manor in Somerset and to Miss Gimingham, who lived in the Manor House in the 1890s. Miss Gimingham is documented as running wood-carving activity there around the turn of the 20th century. The note also refers to an “Egyptian motif” and “El Teb”, neither of which are supported by the table’s European decorative vocabulary.
While this note cannot be independently verified and is not relied upon for formal attribution, it sits comfortably with the table’s hand-carved character, quality and dating to circa 1900, and adds an intriguing layer of contextual interest to an already distinctive piece.
Very good antique condition ...with some wear and small knocks consistent with age, including a discreet, well-executed historic repair to one leg. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1900.
