Antique Silver 'Badminton' Gilded Mug

19th century
Description

Well, this is quite splendid! A solid sterling silver mug, gilded inside, superbly engraved with a playing scene.

The mug is hallmarked for London 1854 with the maker's mark of George Angell & Co. It is very slightly waisted in shape and sits flat. The gilding inside is worn on the top rim, probably as a result of over-enthusiastic cleaning. The engraving is crisp, amazing given its age, and features a badminton match, with flora, trees, pagoda, fence etc.

Dimensions:

Silver Weight: 125g

Height: 8.5cm

Width: 9.5cm

Diameter of base: 7.5cm

Complimentary gift wrapping is available on request.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinoiserie silver items became popular in Europe during the late seventeenth century and experienced revivals throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Silversmiths engraved imagery of East Asian landscapes, pagodas, and figures onto utilitarian items such as mugs and teapots to reflect Western fascination with Oriental aesthetics.

These vessels are typically fabricated from sterling silver, which consists of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. The interior is frequently washed or plated with a thin layer of gold, a process known as vermeil, to prevent corrosion from acidic drinks.

Authenticity is determined by examining official hallmark stamps, which indicate the metal purity, city assay office, maker, and date letter. Additionally, genuine pieces show hand-engraved details rather than machine-stamped patterns and exhibit natural weight and wear consistent with age.

An antique silver mug can be displayed on a sideboard, bookshelf, or desk as a decorative focal point. It can also function as an accent vessel to hold desk stationery or small floral arrangements alongside contemporary decor.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and clean using non-abrasive silver polish formulated for antiques. Avoid scrubbing the interior gilt wash, as excessive friction can wear away the delicate gold layer over time.
