A fine original example of an Imperial German enlisted Pickelhaube, regimentally attributed to Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 18, dating from the Wilhelmine period, circa 1895–1914.
The helmet is constructed with a black lacquered leather shell, showing attractive age patina and honest service wear. It is fitted throughout with correct white metal Other Ranks fittings, including the regulation spike mounted on a circular base secured by domed studs, white metal front trim, rear spine and lower edge trim.
The front is mounted with the Prussian eagle helmet plate, bearing the scroll “Mit Gott für König und Vaterland” and the FR (Friedrich Rex) cypher, correct for Prussian enlisted infantry and pioneer units of the period.
Retaining its original leather chinstrap and fitted with a period Reich cockade (black, white and red), mounted on the correct serrated backing plate. The interior retains the original leather liner, complete, though showing wear and dryness consistent with age and use.
...
The rear peak bears a clear ink regimental marking “P.B.18”, identifying Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 18, with an additional depot or army group marking present but indistinct. Regimentally marked enlisted Pickelhauben are increasingly difficult to find and are particularly sought after by collectors.
Overall, this is a good, honest and untouched example, retaining its original components and desirable unit attribution. A solid collector’s helmet suitable for display or inclusion in an Imperial German military collection.
