16th century
Description

Fine Doulton Lambeth Faience Vase – Slaters Patent, c.1880

An attractive Doulton Lambeth faience vase, dating to circa 1880, showcasing the distinctive Slaters Patent technique. The vases feature a richly textured body with painted decoration of white flowers and dark green stems, yellow leaves on a light sage green ground.

The Slaters Patent process involved rolling clay with textile or other materials to achieve its characteristic texture, after which the applied and painted decoration was added. This complex method typically requires the collaboration of several artists, and multiple initials are present on the base, including the initials ‘MC’ .

Condition:

Offered in fabulous condition, with no notable issues.

Marks:

Very well marked to the base, clearly indicating Doulton Lambeth manufacture, artist involvement, and the Slaters Patent technique.

Dimensions:

Height: 19.5 cm

Notes:

Faience wares using the Slater's Patent technique are increasingly scarce, particularly in paired form and with such strong decorative appeal. A desirable and decorative set, ideal for collectors of Doulton Lambeth, Arts & Crafts ceramics, or distinctive Victorian design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Doulton Lambeth Slaters Patent refers to Victorian art pottery manufactured by the Doulton pottery in Lambeth, London, using a specialized technique patented by John Slater in the late 19th century.

The technique involved pressing actual lace fabrics into unfired ceramic clay to leave an intricate embossed lace impression, which was then decorated with hand-painted enamels, gilding, and coloured glazes.

Authentic examples feature impressed Doulton Lambeth factory marks on the base, along with the Slaters Patent stamp, artist initials, and specific production numbers incised into the clay.

Place the vase as an accent piece on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table alongside natural wooden textures or brass items to highlight its botanical tones and organic tactile surface.

Dust gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or brush, and avoid immersing hand-painted enamel areas in water or using harsh chemical polish that could damage the glaze.
