This is a beautiful late Victorian bedside cupboard dating from circa 1900–1910, made in walnut and of slightly larger proportions than is typically found for pieces of this type. Its design is particularly appealing due to the practical and increasingly sought-after combination of an open upper section and an enclosed cupboard below, making it both decorative and genuinely useful.
The cupboard features striking carved decoration throughout, including the shaped and carved crest, the deeply carved door panel, and well-defined moulded edges. These details give the piece a strong visual presence while remaining refined and balanced in form. The original brass handle remains in place on the front right-hand side of the door, adding further authenticity and period charm.
The walnut has aged attractively overall, with much of the original finish well preserved. There is some erosion to the top surface of the finish, visible in the ph
...otographs, along with a few additional surface marks within the upper open section. These are entirely consistent with age and use and do not detract from the overall quality or appearance of the piece.
The door opens and closes well. One notable age-related characteristic is a slight outward warp to the right-hand side panel, which has resulted in a visible gap along the door edge near the handle. This is clearly shown in the images. It does not affect function in any way and instead adds a pleasing sense of age-worn authenticity that many collectors actively appreciate.
This is a versatile antique cupboard that works perfectly as a bedside table, but it would also suit use in a hallway, bathroom, landing, or living space where attractive storage is required. A well-proportioned, characterful piece with strong Victorian design and honest, original patina.
