Patented by Charles James Mason in 1813, ironstone china was developed in Staffordshire, England, as a durable, vitreous alternative to imported porcelain. Masons became famous for producing decorative tablewares and jugs decorated with Oriental and Imari-inspired patterns.

Ironstone is a hard, dense earthenware made using ground slag, flint, clay, and ironstone slag. Pieces were printed with cobalt transfer designs before being hand-painted with overglaze enamel colours and finished with gilt highlights.

Authentic pieces generally feature printed or impressed makers marks on the underside, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China. They exhibit a heavy weight, a cold-to-the-touch dense body, and rich hand-enameled details overlaying transfer prints.
