Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Koto period refers to Japanese sword manufacture prior to 1596, encompassing the Muromachi era. Wakizashi produced during this era were companion swords worn alongside the main katana by samurai, characterised by distinct regional forging styles and traditional steel folding.

These swords were crafted from tamahagane steel using differential hardening techniques to create a hardened edge and flexible spine. The fittings typically included a ray skin handle wrapped in cord, a fitted metal guard, and a carved wooden scabbard often incorporating a small utility knife called a kozuka.

Authenticity is evaluated through the steel grain pattern, the temper line formed during heat treatment, and tang markings beneath the handle grip. Structural wear consistent with centuries of maintenance and period-correct fittings also assist in dating the piece.

A Japanese short sword is traditionally displayed horizontally on a wooden stand, positioned on a dedicated shelf, mantelpiece, or console table. It serves as a focal historic artefact within curated study, library, or minimalist interior schemes.

High-carbon steel blades require periodic cleaning with traditional choji oil to prevent oxidation and moisture damage. The steel must be wiped with non-abrasive paper, oiled lightly, and stored away from high humidity and direct sunlight.
