Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian black slate mantel clock is a spring-driven clock housed in a heavy black Belgian slate or marble case, popular during the mid-to-late 19th century. These clocks were designed to sit prominently on a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring classic architectural lines, incised decoration, and metal or marble inlays.

These clocks were typically constructed from quarried black slate or marble slabs joined over an iron or wooden sub-frame. Dials were made from ceramic enamel or brass, while decorative accents included gilt-engraved scrolls, malachite or variegated marble inlays, and cast brass bezels.

Authentic period examples feature considerable physical weight due to the solid stone construction, alongside hand-incised foliage or geometric detailing. The mechanical movements are key-wound, often fitted with a pendulum, and display stamped serial numbers or French and British clockmakers marks on the back plate.

Place the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or library shelf to serve as a focal point. Contrast its dark stone casing against muted, contemporary wall paint or alongside natural wood surfaces to highlight its architectural form.

Clean the stone casing using a soft microfiber cloth and a minimal amount of slate oil or mineral oil to preserve its dark lustre. Keep the clock away from damp environments, wind the movement regularly with the correct key, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
