Fine Quality 19thc Mahogany Two Drawer Side Table by W Williamson & Sons of Guildford

19th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Fine Quality 19thC Mahogany Two Drawer Side Table by W Williamson & Sons of Guildford has all the hallmarks of a fine piece of furniture. Standing on good sized crisply turned legs that terminate in gutsy brass cup castors with brown porcelain wheels. The castors themselves are each stamped with the name of the renowned brass-founding firm of the 19thC, Cope & Collinson, that were only used on good quality furniture.

The two free running drawers offer useful storage. The curved back stand is a nice feature too. This table is finished all round so could be placed centrally in a room if required. Presented in fully restored condition, the rich hue of the Mahogany works so well with the brass castors. Being constructed of good dense timber the table has a very good weight to it.

William Williamson and Sons were a company associated with quality furniture spanning the 18th to 20th centuries, but particularly during the 19thC both as a manufacturer as well as a retailer. In fact, in 1899 they received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria for work for Windsor Castle, along with a Royal Warrant from Queen Alexandra in 1901. Stamped pieces from Williamson are held in high regard.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, mahogany side tables were crafted for functional use within English interiors, often serving as writing desks, dressing tables, or hall tables. They typically feature turned or reeded legs, dovetailed frieze drawers, timber knobs, and sometimes a low rear gallery.

Constructed predominantly from mahogany timber, these tables often incorporate pine or oak secondary woods for drawer linings. Metal hardware, such as brass castors and steel screws, was used alongside hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, wooden threaded pegs or hand-cut iron screws fixing the drawer knobs, and makers stamps stamped into drawer edges or undersides. Natural timber movement and uneven wear around the legs and castors also indicate period construction.

Position the table as a hallway console, compact home office desk, or bedroom dressing table. Complement the rich timber tone with neutral linen fabrics, contemporary brass lighting, and minimal ceramic decorative objects.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the piece away from direct radiator heat and direct sunlight to prevent wood movement and colour fading.
