We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Patented in the early nineteenth century by Josiah Spode II, ironstone was developed in Staffordshire, England, as a durable alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. It gained popularity due to its strength and ability to hold vibrant transfer-printed and hand-painted decoration.

Ironstone ceramics were manufactured by mixing slag, flint, and clay to create a dense earthen body fired at high temperatures. Patterns were applied using copper-plate transfer printing, after which artisans frequently applied hand-painted enamels and gold leaf gilding before a final glaze firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside, such as Spode or Spodes Imperial. Additionally, genuine antique ironstone exhibits significant weight, crisp underglaze details, and visible hand-gilded or hand-enameled accents over the transfer outline.

A decorative ironstone urn can serve as a focal centerpiece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or entryway console table. Pairing traditional Imari pattern ceramics with neutral backgrounds, dark wood furniture, or modern minimalist surfaces highlights the intricate colour palette and historical form.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to protect the painted enamels and gilding. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using abrasive cleaners, as moisture and harsh chemicals can degrade overglaze details and cause crazing over time.
