M H Signed Majorie Hoare Original Early 20th Century Slade School Oil Painting on Canvas France Provençal Courtyard Landscape

1920 - 1940
Description

Type of artwork: Original Oil Painting

Artist: Signed with monogram M.H. - Majorie Hoare

Marjorie Hoare (d. 1953) was a British painter working primarily in oil and watercolour during the first half of the 20th century. She studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks, and later continued her training under Franklin White at the Samuel Palmer School, Shoreham. Hoare exhibited at a number of respected institutions, including the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the R.H.A., as well as in regional exhibitions throughout Britain. Her work is characterised by a sensitive handling of light, strong compositional structure, and a particular affection for architectural settings and rural life, often painted during travels in France and the provinces. Although not widely represented at major auction houses today, her work is increasingly appreciated by private collectors for its training pedigree, honest painterly quality, and quietly confident observation.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Surface: Canvas

Subject: A sunlit Provençal courtyard scene showing a rustic stone house set among mature trees, with goats grazing in the foreground and a solitary figure standing near the centre of the composition. The painting is warm and gently observed, with confident brushwork and a natural, harmonious palette capturing light, shade, and rural calm. Architectural details, foliage, and animal forms are handled with sensitivity and balance, giving the work both narrative charm and strong decorative appeal.

Approximate age of artwork: Not Dated Circa 1920s–1940s

Is the artwork framed: Frames, as shown (Offered Free with the Painting)

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century post-impressionist landscape paintings focus on capturing light, atmospheric conditions, and local countryside life using visible brushstrokes and naturalistic colour palettes. Artists associated with schools such as the Slade School brought structured composition to plein air landscape painting across rural Europe.

Artworks from this era were typically executed in oil paints composed of natural pigments ground in drying oils like linseed. These paints were applied onto woven cotton or linen canvas stretched across wooden stretcher bars, occasionally prepared with a gesso priming layer.

Authenticity is assessed through visible surface age, including fine craquelure, natural darkening of varnish, and physical evidence of age on the canvas backing and wooden stretcher. Artist signatures or monograms, stylistic impasto technique, and historical documentation further verify provenance.

Landscape oil paintings work well when hung as focal points above architectural features such as mantelpieces, sideboards, or console tables. Framing the canvas in either a period gilt frame or a modern slim wooden float frame allows the piece to integrate with both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, humid areas, and intense heat sources. Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding moisture or commercial cleaning chemicals, and consult a professional restorer for varnish removal or structural repairs.
