Pair of Early Derby Porcelain Plates, Kylin Pattern, Late 18th Century

Description

An exceptional pair of late 18th-century Derby porcelain plates decorated in the rare Kylin (Qilin) Pattern. The design appears as no. 3 in the Derby plate pattern book and reflects an early and deliberate attempt to reproduce the appearance and character of Chinese export porcelain in its entirety. The four reserved panels with kylin figures are carefully painted and remarkably well preserved, showing a clarity of detail seldom encountered on plates of this period. The extension of decoration to the reverse is especially noteworthy, being highly unusual for English porcelain but entirely consistent with Chinese export practice. Such plates belong to the earliest period of Derby plate production and represent a high point of the factory’s experimental output in the late 18th century. Surviving examples are scarce, particularly in such well-preserved condition.

The Kylin pattern originated in 18th-century Europe as an adaptation of traditional East Asian Imari and mythical creature designs. British manufactories like Derby produced these polychrome enamel patterns to satisfy the demand for orientalist tableware among upper-class households during the Georgian era.

Early Derby ceramics were crafted using soft-paste porcelain compositions, which were fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain. Decorators applied vibrant enamel colours over the glaze, often finishing the details with hand-applied gilding and intricate geometric border patterns.
