A powerful collection of six late 18th Century copper engravings after Hogarth by Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen (1765-1840), the master engraver responsible for introducing Hogarth’s genius to the European continent..
Dating from ca 1794, the portfolio contains the definitive images of the ''Gin Craze'' alongside masterpieces of Georgian satire.
Riepenhausen’s work is highly regarded for its precision and clarity, often preserving details that are lost in later, more worn English strikes. His Hogarth etchings are held in numerous prestigious collections, including the British Museum and the Royal Collection Trust.
Highlights Include:
Beer Street & Gin Lane: The iconic pair that changed British law. A fascinating ''before and after'' of 18th-century social health—one celebrating the merits of English Ale, the other depicting the tragic depths of the Gin epidemic.
Southwark Fair: A sprawling, energetic depiction of a London street fair, filled with acrobats, actors, and the c
...haotic ''humours'' of the city.
The Sleeping Congregation: Hogarth’s famous comedic take on a dull afternoon service—a perennial favorite for its relatable humour.
The Politician & Taste in High Life: Two sharp critiques of obsession—one focused on political mania, the other on the absurd excesses of aristocratic fashion.
In very good antique condition, the paper shows minor age-related foxing and humidity spotting, primarily confined to the margins. The central engraved images are remarkably crisp and dark, maintaining their strong decorative impact. Original blank interleaves remain between each plate, ensuring the reverse of the engravings is clean and free from ink transfer or soiling. They would frame beautifully!
