Knight Fine Antiques and Collectables has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
The chest stands on two original bun feet to the front, with original straight rear legs. The brass handles are later, dating to the early 18th century.
The oak has developed a deep, warm surface consistent with its considerable age.
To the reverse, the name “R Peake” is written in large letters. The exact significance of this marking is unknown and may relate to a former owner, retailer, or transporter, rather than the original maker.
A rare and characterful survivor, suitable for a period interior or as a statement piece in a more eclectic setting.
