Georgian Mahogany Coffee Table.

18th century
Description

A Geo III mahogany coffee table. The octagonal top with raised edge and a segmented satinwood inlaid centre circle, above a vase shaped stem and three splay legs with original brass barrel castors. The top and bottom of this table are both Georgian but did not start life together, the table was made up many years ago to be used as a practical piece of furniture as there were no coffee tables in the Georgian period. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian furniture, spanning 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the widespread use of mahogany. Design elements often include turned pedestals, tripod legs, and marquetry or inlay details.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany and fruitwood inlays, featuring hand-planed joinery, secondary woods such as pine or oak, and hand-lathed central columns supported by cabriole tripod legs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, original brass castors or iron fitments, uneven wear patterns on the feet, and hand-cut marquetry rather than modern veneer applications.

Position the table alongside contemporary upholstered sofas to introduce historical contrast, layering the surface with art monographs or ceramic vessels to ground the room design palette.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
