Indo-persian Flintlock Musket With Mother-of-pearl & Brass Inlay. Late 18th Century
£1,600 $2,141 €1,874
A highly impressive and visually striking Indo-Persian flintlock musket of the late 18th century, lavishly decorated throughout with extensive mother-of-pearl and brass inlay, and fitted with a genuine East India Company flintlock. (circa 1785–1810).
The musket has a long hardwood stock is profusely inlaid over almost its entire surface with finely cut mother-of-pearl tesserae arranged in repeating geometric panels, framed by engraved and pierced brass stripwork. The decoration continues uninterrupted from the forestock through the grip and into the strongly recurved butt, a form characteristic of high-status Indo-Persian and North Indian firearms. The butt is further enriched with contrasting dark panels inset with pearl rosettes and linear brass borders.
The musket retains its long barrel, measuring 41.5 inches, secured by broad brass bands typical of Indian construction, and showing an attractive, even aged patina. The overall length of the musket is 146 cm, confirming it as ...a full-length prestige firearm rather than a shortened jezail or later decorative piece.
The flintlock is a genuine East India Company example, bearing the Company’s rampant lion device, and dating to the late 18th or very early 19th century. Such locks were widely imported into India by the Company and frequently fitted to locally made high-quality arms for elite Indian owners. The lock is complete and mechanically intact, with honest wear consistent with age.
This musket was not a military issue arm, but a high-status civilian or court weapon, made for a wealthy or influential Indian owner during the period of expanding East India Company dominance, combining a reliable British lock with lavish local craftsmanship.
A scarce and highly decorative survival, equally suitable for the advanced collector of Indo-Persian arms or as a centrepiece display item.

Barrel length: 41.5 inches
