George V Silver Enamel Compact Birmingham 1916

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A George V era silver and guilloche enamel compact is hallmarked for Birmingham 1916 with a slightly indistinct maker’s mark C & S or C which could be for Cohen & Charles. The compact base and lid are made of plain smooth silver with a good working hinge and attachment rings. The lid is inset with mauve guilloche enamel in a wavy pattern around a target. Variations in the depth of about three of the wavy line circles cleverly create eye catching changes in the colour shade, from mauve to a pinkish mauve. The lid interior holds a mirror and the lid catch works perfectly.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A guilloche silver enamel compact is a small portable powder container made from sterling silver, decorated with an engine-turned geometric pattern overlaid with translucent vitreous enamel.

Early 20th-century examples were typically constructed using sterling silver, glass enamel powders fired at high temperatures, and internal mirror fittings.

Authenticity is verified by British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office symbol such as the Birmingham anchor, and a specific date letter corresponding to 1916.

The integrated suspension loop allows the piece to be worn on a long silver chain as a statement pendant or attached to a modern chatelaine.

Silver areas should be gently buffed with a soft silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive creams or ultrasonic cleaners that could crack or lift the vitreous enamel layer.
