Elmgarden has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The cornice is in the shape of ramparts it is profusely carved with Griffons Roundels and naturalistic plants. This fortress theme is carried out at the bottom of the piece in the high plinth, which is carved with Stags.
The cupboard has 4 panelled doors and loose shelves inside. There are 2 more secret hinged compartments hidden in the cornice and the bottom of the bottom cupboard has been made to be lifted up
The overall condition of the cupboard is good, but there are 2 pieces of the mouldings on one door missing
This is a very unusual piece it is in the German Renaissance Revival Style and is similar to other examples of pieces by the German Richard Riemerschmid
The cupboard stands 65” high, 43” wide and 15” deep
