Art Deco Oak Coffee Table

1920 - 1940
Description

An Art Deco oak coffee table of clean, architectural form, dating to the 1930s, and very much in the manner of Heal & Son.

The table features a well-proportioned circular solid oak top, raised on four square-section legs with subtle linear incised detailing, united by a lower circular undertier that provides both visual balance and practical storage. The restrained decoration and emphasis on proportion and craftsmanship are hallmarks of British Art Deco design, where utility and elegance were carefully combined.

The oak displays an attractive, warm tone with a pleasing, even patina, consistent with age. The overall design is understated yet confident, making it a highly versatile piece that works equally well in both period and contemporary interiors.

While no maker’s mark is present, the table is closely comparable to documented Heal’s designs of the period, both in construction and aesthetic, and would sit comfortably alongside known examples.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco oak furniture combines clean geometric lines, functional forms, and subtle carved decoration, reflecting a transition from ornate historical revival styles to modern functional design.

Tables from this era were constructed primarily using solid European oak, featuring traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, turned or fluted legs, and integrated lower tier shelving.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved geometric accents, original light or golden oak finishes, natural age-related surface patina, and sturdy solid wood construction rather than contemporary veneers or modern fixings.

Pair the table with neutral upholstered sofas to highlight the warm wood tone, and arrange the upper and lower tiers with art glass, ceramics, or stacked books for balanced texture.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timber, and immediately wipe up moisture to protect the original surface finish.
