Antique 2.81ct Opal and 0.71ct Diamond Silver Pendant Circa 1890

19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

A stunning, fine and impressive antique 2.81 carat opal and 0.71 carat diamond, silver and 18 carat yellow gold set pendant; part of our antique jewellery collections.

This stunning, fine and impressive Victorian pendant has been crafted in silver with 18ct yellow gold settings.

This pendant displays a central feature yellow gold claw set oval cabochon white opal.

The pierced decorated foliated, scrolling frame is embellished with forty pavé and claw set diamonds, in a combination of Old European and eight cuts.

The lower border of the pendant supports three individually articulating yellow gold claw set cabochon cut white opals, completing the design.

This antique Victorian opal pendant is suspended from an 18ct yellow gold chain via an escutcheon-shaped bale ornamented with four further pavé set diamonds.

This antique opal pendant has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18 carat gold and silver.

This impressive example of Victorian jewellery is supplied with an IDGL diamond and gemstone grading report card.

This opal and diamond pendant necklace reflects the Victorian admiration for opals, long valued for their mystical beauty and associations with love, hope and creativity. It makes a meaningful gift for anniversaries, birthdays or special celebrations, and is especially thoughtful for October birthdays, as opal is the traditional birthstone for that month.

Images do not always reflect the true colour and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual colour and showcases each stone.

Condition

The antique pendant is excellent quality, set with stunning opals displaying a scintillating play of colour and presence; such opals displaying red tones are highly desirable.

The impressive diamonds display a fine white colour and brilliance; although clarity graded at P1, the diamonds show fine brilliance.

This Victorian opal pendant is an excellent gauge of gold and silver, and is in excellent condition.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine Victorian opal pendant with diamonds.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian jewellery from the 1890s frequently featured opals following the discovery of major Australian deposits, often set alongside accent diamonds in openwork scroll motifs and drop pendant configurations.

Jewellers during this era commonly set diamonds and opals into silver-topped gold settings, combining the neutral tone of silver for gemstone presentation with gold for structural stability.

Authentic late 19th-century pendants typically showcase old European or rose-cut accent diamonds, silver-upon-gold setting construction, hand-formed openwork scroll details, and period-accurate bail designs.

A late Victorian pendant functions as a central focal piece when paired with clean-lined modern evening wear, dark velvet fabrics, or tailored open-collared shirts.

Opals are delicate, porous gemstones requiring gentle maintenance; clean with a soft dry cloth, avoid immersion in liquids or ultrasonic cleaners, and store away from direct light and heat sources.
