This elegant antique Dutch Delftware tea caddy is a fine example of blue-and-white tin-glazed earthenware, painted in a charming chinoiserie manner. The crisp rectangular form with bevelled shoulders gives the piece an architectural presence, while the hand-painted scenes—figures, birds and stylised floral sprays—capture the European fascination with the “Orient” that shaped so much decorative art in the 18th century.

Tea was a costly and highly prized commodity in Europe during the 1700s, and tea caddies were made not only to store delicate leaves safely but also to sit proudly within the ritual of tea drinking. Pieces like this were part of a refined domestic world where taste, travel, trade and fashion met on the tea table.

Material / Technique:

Tin-glazed earthenware (Delftware), underglaze cobalt-blue decoration.

Date / Origin:

Dutch Delftware, 18th century (working dating: c. 1760–1790), based on form, glaze character and the style of cobalt painting.

Condition:

The body is in excellent antique condition, with well-preserved decoration and an attractive, age-consistent craquelure to the glaze. The only significant issue is the cover: the lid has been broken and glued (restoration). The caddy itself displays very well.
