Description

A Staffordshire pearlware jug dating to around 1790–1800, of compact proportions with rounded body, fluted neck and neatly shaped pouring spout. This smaller format is distinctly less common than larger Staffordshire jugs of the period.

The body is moulded with cabbage-leaf relief panels outlined in brown enamel feathering with serrated edges. Within the panels are freely painted floral sprigs in polychrome enamels, all applied by hand. The rim is finished with a simple foliate relief border picked out in blue and green enamels, uneven in execution and characteristic of early workmanship.

The pearlware body has a pale bluish-white tone. The base is unmarked, in keeping with Staffordshire practice. Comparable examples have been tentatively attributed to William Baddeley and Booth’s of Stoke, as noted in auction and dealer literature.

A rare small-format jug with clear decorative and collector appeal.

FAQs

Pearlware is a refined earthenware body developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late 18th century. Introduced as an evolution of creamware, it features a small amount of cobalt added to the lead glaze, resulting in a whiter appearance that mimicked Chinese export porcelain.

These pieces were crafted from fired white clay bodies covered in a cobalt-tinted lead glaze. Relief patterns such as cabbage leaf moulding were created using ceramic moulds, after which overglaze or underglaze enamels were hand-painted onto the surface.

Authentic Georgian pearlware typically displays pooled blue-tinted glaze in the crevices, crevices under the base, and around handles. The body is lightweight compared to modern ceramics, and hand-painted enamels often show slight variance and fine crazing under inspection.

A pearlware jug functions as a standalone decorative accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open kitchen shelving. It can also be utilized as a vase for natural dried botanical arrangements to add texture to contemporary spaces.
