Description

Here we have a lovely example of an Oak cased lock stamped for John Shaw & Sons and dating to the mid 19th Century.

This particular type of lot was invented around 1849 and known as Jones's drunkards lock by reason of the key being operated right or wrong side up - shooting two bolts, with one original key and three screws

Provenance: From the mill in Mill Street, Padiham and was occupied by James Hargreaves who was respectfully known as "Nobby"

An oak cased stock lock is a traditional surface-mounted door security mechanism housed within a solid block of oak timber and reinforced with iron plates. Popular from the 17th through the 19th centuries, these rim locks were widely fitted on entry doors, outbuildings, and estate gates.

Stock locks combine a hardwood casing, typically dense oak, with hand-forged wrought iron faceplates, internal iron levers, and a steel bolt mechanism.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut mortise slots within the wooden block, surface irregularities from hand-forged ironwork, cut iron fixings, and natural timber shrinkage around the keyhole.
