Hunting Painting by Colin Graeme Roe C.880 Paired Setters Oil on Board

19th century
Description

Late-Victorian c.1880 oil on Winsor & Newton board by Colin Graeme — paired Gordon & Irish Red & White Setters, signed, framed, exhibition and auction provenance.

Short Summary

Refined late-Victorian cabinet-scale sporting portrait by Colin Graeme (British, fl.1858–1910). Half-length paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter; oil on Winsor & Newton board, signed and ready to hang.

Full Description (

A well-executed late-Victorian sporting portrait, circa 1880, by Colin Graeme. This intimate cabinet-scale study depicts a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter in profile against a Highland moorland. Executed in oil on an original Winsor & Newton prepared board, the work demonstrates Graeme’s economical composition and refined technique: warm mid-tone ground, translucent glazing to model form, directional brushwork to define coat and feathering, and selective impasto to enliven the eyes and muzzle. The restricted heads-and-shoulders format intensifies expression and working temperament while atmospheric handling of heather and distant hills situates the sitters in authentic upland shooting country. Signed lower corner: “Colin Graeme.” Verso retains a Winsor & Newton prepared-panel label consistent with late-19th-century manufacture.

Provenance & Exhibition

• Acquired from notable Yorkshire auction house.

• Formerly in a private Yorkshire vendor collection.

• Curated and catalogued by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.

• Exhibited: Victorian Sporting Art: Dogs, Field & Country Life, Famous Lord Hill Museum, January 2026. Archival documentation available to serious buyers.

Condition Summary

Good, used condition consistent with age. Paint film stable overall; minor surface foxing and small, localized paint losses visible under close inspection. No active flaking observed at time of examination. Panel support appears sound from surface inspection. Later gilt gesso frame shows age-related wear including surface abrasion, minor gesso loss and craquelure.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian canine art grew in popularity during the nineteenth century, driven by cultural interest in field sports and breeding. These works typically depict working dogs, such as setters, pointers, and hounds, rendered with anatomical attention against naturalistic rural landscapes.

Artists during this era applied oil pigments onto stretched cotton or linen canvases, as well as solid wood or millboard panels. Frames were predominantly composed of wood mouldings adorned with cast plaster composition ornament and finished with applied leaf gilding.

Authentic period paintings display natural signs of age, including stable craquelure across the paint layer and oxidation on the wood panel or canvas reverse. Original framer labels, brass artist plaques, or period signatures assist in verifying age and origins.

A gilt-framed canine painting functions well as an accent piece against contemporary dark or warm neutral walls. Placing traditional artwork alongside clean-lined modern furniture provides balanced visual contrast within hallway, library, or living space schemes.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, active heat sources, and damp environments to avoid panel movement or paint flaking. Clean dust away using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, ensuring no liquid cleaners touch the delicate gilded frame or painted surface.
