Barye: A Rare Bronze "Animalier" Ostrich

ANTOINE LOUIS BARYE**: a rare French “animalier” bronze of an OSTRICH, the only living bird with didactyl feet*. The flightless bird (and the world’s largest) stands tall on a naturalistic base modelled with shells, plants and rocks, having unearthed a small snake or large worm which can now be seen within in its beak. 8.25ins (21cms) tall. c1865-1875

* Didactyl feet are those with just two toes, for which the ostrich is famous ~ most birds have three or four toes. The larger toe takes most of the weight of the bird; the smaller is used for stability when running ~ indeed the ostrich can run very fast indeed!

** ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE, (1795-1875) was one of the earliest French romantic “animalier” bronze sculptors, sometimes referred to as the “Father of the Animalier movement”.
