Edwardian Era Silver Apostle Figure London 1908

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

An Edwardian era solid silver figure of an apostle or saint with clear hallmarks for London 1908 and makers mark for Maxfield & Sons. The finely modelled and cast silver figure features a berobed and bearded man holding a bell and an open book. Emerging from his cloak is an animal, looking like a small pig. The front of the pedestal base is adorned with a silver camel. The pedestal base is made of black lacquered wood. This charming figure could be a journeying preacher — from my research of animals associated with saints it could be St Anthony Abbott (pig and bell) or St Aphrodisius (camel). More likely the former. In excellent condition, no damage. Weight including loaded base 7oz/220 gr. Height of silver figure above pedestal 9cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver apostle figures originated in medieval and Renaissance metalwork, traditionally decorating spoon terminals or altar pieces, and experienced widespread revival production during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Edwardian figurines were predominantly cast in sterling silver bearing official assay hallmarks, frequently mounted onto dark timber, ebonised wood, or marble plinths for stability.

Authenticity is verified through struck British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling purity, a city assay mark such as the London leopards head, and a specific date letter denoting the year of manufacture.

Small silver sculptures function well when placed on a dark wood bookshelf, a mantelpiece, or alongside leather-bound books to add reflective contrast and historical detail.

Preserve silver figures by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying non-abrasive silver polish sparingly to clear tarnish without stripping natural patination from recessed details.
