Description

Type of item: Antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl

Origin: Japan

Date: Late 19th century, Edo / early Meiji period (circa 1870–1900)

Decoration: Hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red, green enamels and gilt highlights.

Description: A finely decorated antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl, dating from the late 19th century. The interior features a detailed figural scene depicting a traditionally dressed woman holding a parasol, surrounded by peony blossoms and fan motifs. The exterior is decorated with scrolling foliage and iron-red roundels, a classic Imari design of the period.

The painting shows confident handwork with visible brush variation and a well-balanced palette. The combination of figural subject matter and rich colour makes this a particularly decorative example of genuine antique Imari ware.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region and shipped from the port of Imari, renowned for distinct underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration.

Imari wares are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, painted with underglaze cobalt blue, and subsequently decorated with overglaze iron red, green enamels, and gilt details before undergoing secondary firing.

Authentic pieces display characteristic asymmetry, visible brushwork in the enamel detailing, iron-red and deep cobalt palettes, and minor hand-crafting imperfections on the foot rim.

Position the bowl as an accent piece on a sideboard, console table, or within open shelving to allow its dense geometric and floral patterns to contrast with neutral backdrops.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers, abrasive pads, or immersion in hot water to protect delicate enamels.
