Description

A superb and impressively large Chinese porcelain charger, expertly decorated in the vibrant Famille Verte (wucai) palette. The central medallion is a tour-de-force of narrative painting, depicting an elaborate palace scene.

The focal point is a high-ranking dignitary riding in a goat-drawn carriage—a classic motif representing the Emperor Wu of Jin's legendary search for a consort—traversing a garden filled with attendants, scholars, and a "boy at play." The architectural details of the pavilions and the lush landscape are rendered with the fine line-work and translucent enamels typical of high-quality mid 19th-century revival pieces.

The rim is finished with a dense "cracked ice" pattern over a seeded green ground, punctuated by four lobed cartouches featuring auspicious sea creatures and leaping carp (symbols of perseverance and success).

Prestigious Provenance: The base carries the original circular paper label of Bluett & Sons, London. As one of the premier 20th-century dealers of Oriental art (with clients including the British Museum and the King of Sweden), this label serves as a significant mark of quality and historical interest.

FAQs

Famille verte is a style of Chinese porcelain decoration developed during the Qing Dynasty, most notably during the Kangxi period (16621722). The term was coined in the nineteenth century to describe ceramics where translucent green overglaze enamels dominate the decorative palette alongside iron red, yellow, aubergine, and blue.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay white porcelain. The underglaze or transparent glaze is applied before initial firing, after which mineral-based overglaze enamelspredominantly copper-derived greens and iron-derived redsare painted onto the surface and fired a second time at a lower temperature.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting the fine, compact porcelain paste, the characteristic slight blue-green tint of the white glaze, the translucency and iridescence of the enamels, and the precise execution of line work. Reign marks on the underside are checked against established period calligraphic styles.

A large porcelain charger can be displayed on a dark wood sideboard using a brass or timber display stand, integrated into a gallery wall arrangement, or positioned inside an illuminated glass cabinet to highlight the enamel detail.
