Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An etagere is a open-shelved piece of furniture used to display ornaments, books, or small items. The design gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century across Europe, serving as functional storage and a decorative accent in formal drawing rooms.

Craftsmen typically constructed these pieces using fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring turned column supports, spindle galleries, and brass castors. Joinery techniques included mortise and tenon joints, often complemented by brass inlay or delicate mouldings.

Authentic period examples display turned or hand-carved uprights, natural age-related patination to the finish, and period-correct brass castors secured with original screws. Examining the underside of the shelves for hand-planed timber supports help confirm nineteenth-century manufacture.

Position the piece in an alcove or beside seating as an occasional table, or place it in an entryway to arrange books and art objects. The open, multi-tiered structure allows light to pass through, making it suitable for compact modern spaces.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to retain the timber moisture. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinking or warping of the walnut.
