Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Relief-moulded pottery refers to ceramic vessels produced during the Victorian era using plaster moulds to create raised, three-dimensional designs on the exterior surface. Popularised in the 1830s, this technique allowed manufacturers to mass-produce detailed narrative, botanical, and classical motifs on pitchers and tableware.

These pieces were typically cast from earthenware, stoneware, or ironstone bodies using liquid clay slip poured into plaster moulds. After unfolding and drying, the vessels were fired and often finished with liquid glazes, salt glazes, or lead glazes in contrasting colours around the handles and rims.

Authentic pieces usually display registration marks or manufacturer stamps on the base, distinct moulding seams from two-part or multi-part plaster moulds, and signs of wear such as crazing in the glaze or minor foot rim abrasion consistent with age.

A relief-moulded jug functions well as a decorative focal point on a sideboard, open kitchen shelving, or a mantelpiece. It can be styled empty as a sculpted accent or used as a vase for dried florals and foliage.

Wash the item gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or abrasive sponges. Ensure the piece dries thoroughly, and avoid soaking unglazed foot rims to prevent moisture retention within the ceramic body.
