For Sale by Poirot Art Deco
Description

Maurice Adams saw himself as the natural successor to the great furniture makers of the eighteenth century and had ambitious plans for 20th-century British interior design. All Adams’s furniture was made by hand in Gloucester and displayed in Adams’s showroom in Portman Square, London.

This pair of side cabinets, designed for the sitting room, was part of Adams’s ‘Grosvenor’ range and could be made to fit any specification. The interior was fitted with a cupboard which Adams suggested might store books or music. ‘Some form of side table or cabinet is necessary in every drawing room’, Adams observed, in his treatise on furniture and interior design, Modern Decorative Art, published in 1930.

The Grosvenor range was distinguished by its highly finished veneers. This emphasis on glossy veneers is characteristic of much of Adams’s work. The designer praised the marble-like effect of veneers and their ability to exploit the ‘natural beauty’ of figured woods. The curvaceous shape of this cabinet displays the veneers to maximum effect.

A cabinet of the same design is found in the V&A’s collection.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maurice Adams was a prominent British designer in the 1920s and 1930s known for producing high-end Art Deco furniture. His work characteristically featured sleek curved forms, polished highly figured wood veneers, and streamlined architectural silhouettes tailored for luxury interiors.

Cabinetmakers of the Art Deco era typically utilised figure-rich timber veneers such as burr walnut, birds eye maple, and macassar ebony mounted on solid hardwood frames. Finishes were achieved using traditional French polishing to highlight the natural swirling grain patterns of the wood.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise grain-matching or book-matching across curved doors and panels, period-correct metal hardware such as brass or silver-plated pulls, and solid joinery like hand-cut dovetails within internal drawers and framing.

A pair of side cabinets can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a bed frame or placed alongside contemporary seating in a living space. Pairing them with understated lighting or polished metallic accents highlights the warm grain and historic silhouette.

To preserve French polished veneers, dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the grain. Keep cabinets away from direct heat sources, bright sunlight, and moisture to prevent veneer lifting or discoloration.
