Three Georgian Scrapbook Pages Featuring Caricatures, Armorials And Engravings
£780 $1,069 €897
Three wonderfully eccentric, detailed and highly decorative pages from a Georgian scrapbook, now framed and glazed and ready to display.
Each sheet has a different focus
Sheet 1
The principal image on the first sheets is by the artist George Cruikshank and is of a Dandy. These works satirized fashion and society of the time, with some specific prints identified as ''Monstrosities'' series and other caricatures. There are further hand-colored etchings, dating to the early 19th century. The artist George Cruikshank (1792-1878) was a prominent caricaturist and illustrator, known for his work with Charles Dickens. The ''Monstrosities'' series satirized the extreme clothing styles in vogue each year from 1816 to 1828. The sheet also includes humorous hand written ditties and poems on society at the time.
Sheet 2.
Includes a collage featuring various historical engravings, portraits, and handwritten/printed text snippets which are related to British history and notable fig...ures. The collage includes portraits of historical figures such as John, Duke of Marlborough, William Cecil Earl of Salisbury, Edward Sackville Earle of Dorset, and Lady Duncannen. It also contains miscellaneous text, including political terms (''Democratical Radical Reforme''), epigrams, and a ''View of Regent Street from Waterloo Place''.
Sheet 3
Features a detailed heraldic coat of arms, complete with supporters (lions), a crest (a lion on a crown), and a motto banner. and several portraits of historical figures, likely from British nobility or royalty, below a scene titled ''Symptoms of a first Voyage''.
The names of the individuals associated with the portraits include the Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Clarence, Duke of Cumberland, Duke of York, and Duke of William.
The names ''Richard'', ''Henry'', and ''Henry'' are also visible below three other portraits at the bottom of the image.
The top panel, titled ''Symptoms of a first Voyage'', is an illustration by Henry Thomas Alken depicting people experiencing seasickness.
All three sheets are both highly decorative and serve as a fascinating reference for historians or heraldic enthusiasts, fashion lovers or those who are interested in specific historic figures of the Georgian era.
