A Fine George III Period Demi-lune Burr Elm And Burr Yew Wood Commode

£36,000    $48,772    €42,412
English, ca. 1780

A Demi-Lune Commode Veneered in Tightly Figured Burr Elm and Inlaid with Fields of Burr Yew Wood.

The classic demi-lune shape became a very popular form for commodes and tables in the latter stage of the 18th century. Makers such as Gillows and Mayhew & Ince were actively promoting this new furniture form. During this period, exotic woods imported from the newly discovered lands were most commonly used. However, a piece that follows the design language of the period while being inlaid with the finest English timbers is a true rarity.

Due to the strong use of English woods, we believe this piece has solid grounds for attribution to Gillows. Furthermore, designs of closely related pieces can be found illustrated in Gillows of Lancaster and London, written by Susan E. Stuart (2008).
