Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts firedogs were produced primarily between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement emphasised handcrafted metalwork, visible construction techniques, and organic forms, rejecting mass industrial production in favour of traditional blacksmithing.

Historically, andirons were forged from wrought iron, cast iron, or brass. Wrought iron was favoured in the Arts and Crafts era for its malleability and the visible hammer marks left during the hand-forging process.

Authentic pieces display hand-worked irregularities, hammer texture, and traditional joinery such as rivets or tenons rather than modern welds. The metal often shows natural surface oxidation or a historic wax patina rather than synthetic paint coatings.

These functional objects can be placed inside an open fireplace or inglenook hearth to display birch logs. In non-working fireplaces, they serve as sculptural hearth accents alongside stone, brick, or tiled surrounds.

Keep wrought iron dry to prevent active rust formation. Clean periodically with a stiff brush to remove dust and ash, and apply a light coat of clear beeswax or specialist iron paste to preserve the dark finish and protect the metal surface.
