Large Bronze Figure of a Knight C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Splendid large bronze figure of a medieval knight or warrior c.1900. Measuring 36" tall to the tip of the sword. Dressed in a helmet and chain mail tunic, with a dagger at his waist and carrying a large kite shaped shield on his left arm which features (unusually) a Latin cross with the cross of St Andrew (or Saltire) behind, suggesting a Scottish connection perhaps. With his right arm he raises a long broadsword in salute or victory. Very well cast in bronze with superb colour and detail. Stood on an 18" x 12" base. Sighed in the cast E Bull (or Butt?). Excellent condition.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Gothic Revival and Romanticism sparked widespread interest in medieval chivalry, prompting foundry artists to create bronze figures depicting knights and historic combatants.

Sculptures from this period were typically produced using the lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chiselling to refine details such as chainmail texture and the application of a chemical patina.

Authentic period castings display natural handling wear to raised surface areas, crisp hand-chased details, appropriate seams, potential sculptor or foundry signatures, and an aged patina within the recessed contours.

A bronze figure functions as a focal accent when placed on a dark wood mantelpiece, an office desk, or integrated into a curated bookshelf display alongside classic leather-bound books.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft brush or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents, harsh polishes, or water that could alter or strip the original patination.
