Hingstons of Wilton has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
Constructed from beautifully figured mahogany and enhanced with delicate inlay, the desk features a classic horseshoe-shaped superstructure rising above a rich red leather writing surface.

The arrangement of graduated drawers and pigeonholes provides generous storage while maintaining a balanced, symmetrical appearance. Raised on tapering square legs terminating in brass caps and castors, the desk is designed to stand freely within a room, making it ideal as a centrepiece for a study, library, or executive office. Maple & Co’s renowned quality is evident throughout, from the precision of the joinery to the finely cast brass handles.

History of the Carlton House Desk
The Carlton House desk takes its name from Carlton House in London, once the residence of the Prince of Wales (later George IV). The form emerged in the late 18th century and became especially popular during the Georgian and Regency periods. Its defining feature is the semi-circular or three-sided superstructure of drawers and compartments, designed for correspondence, writing implements, and personal papers.

By the Edwardian period (1901–1910), the Carlton House desk experienced a revival, often executed in fine mahogany with restrained inlay and lighter proportions. These later examples, such as this one by Maple & Co, reflect Edwardian taste for elegance, order, and craftsmanship, blending classical inspiration with modern usability.
