Fine 19th Century Meissen Cobalt And Burnished Gold Topographical Cup And Saucer, C.1830-40

A superb collector’s example of Meissen porcelain from the second quarter of the 19th century, combining technical innovation with painterly finesse.
 
The cup and saucer are covered in an even, saturated cobalt blue ground, richly finished in burnished gold – a costly innovation in the 1830s, used by Meissen only on their most prestigious wares. To the front of the cup, a rectangular reserve is framed in gilding and exquisitely painted with a pastoral riverside view, complete with figures, architecture and boats; the saucer centre is decorated with a scrolling gilt motif.

Material: hard-paste porcelain, cobalt enamel, burnished gold
 
Marks: underglaze crossed swords and additional red triangle mark denoting this type of gilding; all marks authentic and conforming to factory practice of the period.
