Pair of 19th Century Mahogany Umbrella Stands with Brass Mounts

19th century
Description

Pair of 19th-century mahogany umbrella stands, each of cylindrical form and finished in a deep, warm patina. The bodies are encircled with brass bands and centred with decorative brass lion’s mask ring handles, lending a classical and refined appearance. Each stand is raised on a turned circular base, providing both stability and architectural presence.

The interiors retain their original removable metal drip liners, designed to protect the mahogany and accommodate umbrellas or walking sticks. The stands show light surface wear, minor marks, and patina consistent with age and use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Umbrella stands became prominent household fixtures in the 19th century as walking sticks and umbrellas became standard personal accessories. Craftspeople produced these vessels using turned woods such as mahogany, often incorporating brass binding or cast metal liners to contain dampness.

Traditional 19th-century umbrella stands were typically constructed from solid or veneered mahogany, oak, or cast iron. Wooden examples often featured coopering techniques, turned rims, brass strapping, and internal metal drip pans designed to catch water.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display natural wood shrinkage, original brass fittings with aged oxidisation, and signs of hand-tooling on the interior base. Cast iron or zinc removable liners often show historic patina consistent with period water exposure.

Position the vessel in an entryway or foyer beside a console table to provide functional storage for walking canes or umbrellas. Alternatively, use it in an empty corner or library alcove to display antique architectural rolls or dried botanical arrangements.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and ensure internal zinc or brass liners are dry to avoid damaging the wood interior.
