Silver Decanter Label - Unusual Title

19th century
Description

This is a Victorian silver decanter/bottle label for Kimmel. This can also be spelt Kummel. It is a traditional sweet clear herbal liqueur dating back to the 17th century flavoured with caraway, cumin and fennel. The label is by William Comyns, London 1895. I have only managed to find two other examples so would appear to be a rare label.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Decanter labels, also termed bottle tickets, emerged in Great Britain during the 1730s. They were created following the introduction of clear lead glass decanters to identify contents such as wines, spirits, and fortifying liqueurs.

The majority were produced from sterling silver, Sheffield plate, or electroplated nickel silver. Enamel, porcelain, mother-of-pearl, and bone were also utilised for specific regional or commercial markets.

Authentic silver pieces typically bear official hallmarks showing the makers mark, silver purity mark, assay office mark, and date letter. Engraving styles and border construction also align with specific historical periods.

These items are styled suspended around the necks of glass or crystal decanters on a drinks tray, bar cart, or sideboard to add detailed metallic interest to a modern bar setup.

Silver pieces should be gently wiped with a silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish without stripping oxidisation from the engraved lettering. Washing in warm water with mild soap is recommended, avoiding harsh chemical dips that degrade fine detail.
