Victorian 18 Carat Gold Sword Jabot Pin with Old Cut Diamonds, Cannetille, C.1860-80

19th century
Description

A very stylish Victorian gold sword brooch / jabot pin of fine quality, dating to circa 1860–1880. The piece is crafted in high-carat yellow gold, acid tested as 18 carat (750), and richly decorated with cannetille work.

Three old hand-cut diamonds are set to the hilt, with an estimated total weight of 0.28 carat. The diamonds are bright and lively, giving a lovely sparkle against the warm gold. The hilt is well modelled on both sides and the overall effect is both eye-catching and elegant.

This is a good-sized piece that wears particularly well on the lapel of a jacket or coat, and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Victorian jewellery.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A jabot pin is a style of brooch featuring two decorative elements joined by a long pin, designed to pin through a neck ruffle or lapel. Sword and dagger motifs became prominent during the mid-to-late Victorian era, influenced by Romanticism, historical revival styles, and novel figurative imagery.

Victorian fine pins were typically crafted in high-carat yellow gold, such as 15ct or 18ct. Craftsmen utilised hand-working techniques including cannetille filigree, granulations, hand-engraving, and bezel or grain-set gemstones such as old-cut diamonds.

Authentic pieces often exhibit era-specific gemstone cuts like old mine or rose cuts, hand-finished filigree, and period hallmarks or makers marks. Construction details such as long steel or gold pins, original safety chains, and gold testing confirm authenticity.

While primarily worn as personal jewellery, antique stickpins and jabot pins can be displayed in a modern interior by mounting them inside velvet shadow-box frames, velvet ring trays, or glass-topped antique jewellery display boxes on a dressing table.

Store gold and gemstone pins individually in soft velvet-lined boxes to prevent scratches. Clean gently using warm water, mild soapy solution, and a soft-bristled brush, ensuring the piece is dried completely and stored away from harsh chemicals.
