Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II mahogany bureau dates from the mid-18th century (17271760) and is characterised by a sloping fall-front lid that opens to reveal a fitted writing compartment. These pieces usually feature dense Cuban mahogany construction, graduated drawers, decorative brass fittings, and sturdy bracket feet.

Georgian bureaux were predominantly crafted from dense, imported Cuban mahogany, prized for its deep colour and durability. Secondary timbers like oak or pine were used for interior drawer linings, while handles and keyhole escutcheons were cast from solid brass.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber surfaces on the reverse, and heavy Cuban mahogany timber. The brass handles should show signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and cast construction details consistent with the Georgian era.

An antique mahogany bureau can be positioned in a study, living room, or hallway as a functional workstation or accent piece. Pairing the dark timber with modern abstract artwork or contemporary lighting creates an engaging visual contrast between classical structure and modern aesthetics.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out or splitting.
