Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire flatback figures were produced in large quantities in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the Victorian era. Designed with flat, unmodelled backs, these pottery pieces were intended to sit flush against fireplace mantels as decorative domestic ornaments depicting popular historical figures, folk heroes, and contemporary celebrities.

These figures were typically press-moulded from earthenware clay, coated in a clear lead glaze, and fired. The vibrant decoration was applied using underglaze colours or overglaze enamel paints, which were subsequently fired in a secondary kiln pass.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces generally exhibit a flat back with minimal modelling, a small vent hole to release gases during firing, and subtle manufacturing imperfections. Original enamels may show age-appropriate wear or crazing within the glaze, unlike modern reproductions which often feature smooth, fully modelled backs and uniform chemical glazes.

Staffordshire figures add narrative character when curated alongside modern artwork on bookshelves, credenzas, or traditional fireplace mantels. Pairing their historic folk-art forms with clean-lined contemporary surfaces creates an engaging stylistic contrast within eclectic or traditional spaces.

Maintain earthenware figures by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid submerging the piece in water or using harsh detergents, as moisture can enter fine crazing lines and damage delicate overglaze enamels.
