The work is traditionally titled “St. John’s College, Oxford: Gateway Leading to the Quadrangle”, a title which appears in historic and later catalogue references for this plate. Toussaint was well known for his architectural subjects, particularly views of historic European buildings rendered with precision and tonal depth.
