A Striking Pair Of American Silver-plated Three Tier Stands By R. Wallace, Connecticut For Use On The Ocean Liner Ss Leviathan, C.1923

In the golden age of Transatlantic travel Leviathan was the largest of the Ocean Liners. Originally built in Germany in 1913 and then laid up in New Jersey during the First World War, she was converted to a Troop carrier in 1917 and renamed by President Woodrow Wilson.
 
After the war Leviathan was completely reconditioned and returned as the flagship ocean liner for United States Lines in 1923.
 
This pair of stands was presumably used in the lavishly decorated dining room where the fluted Cornithian columns with gold capitals supported a painted neo-classically inspired ceiling, leading the ship to being referred to as the ''Floating Versailles''.
 
The eagle medallion on both stands is the emblem of the SS Leviathan. The underside is engraved ''R Wallace U.S.A. 0376 Silver Soldered Gimbel Brothers''.
