ANTIQUE #SA1189044

Early 17th Century James I Small Oak Chest C. 1620

£1,600    $2,192    €1,839
With a superb patina and well developed colour, this beautiful small and beautifully proportioned coffer dates from around 1620 and has a well carved nulled frieze and nulled panel, interspersed with original punched and palm leaf decoration.

The panels are fielded within a chamfered frame, the lower muntin with sloped profile to allow water to run off – houses in the period not being nearly as dry and waterproof as we enjoy today.

On original tall stile feet, continuous with the frame, and with channel carved detailing to the carcase and lid.

Of pegged and dowelled construction, all of the timbers and pegs are original and the coffer is in superb condition for age. The original split ring hinges have been replaced in the early 19th century with blacksmith forged iron hinges and the steel lock is later also. There are a few old worm holes, long dead and treated, and the coffer is heavy, very robust and usable and a really scarce and beautiful early example.
