Fine and richly coloured 19th century portrait of Charles Gordon Esq. of Wiscombe Park Devon attributed to the celebrated artist Sir John Watson Gordon RA (1788-1864)
 
The ruddy face sitter is depicted seated, three-quarter length in an extensive moorland landscape with his spaniel by his side. He wears the traditional costume of gentlemen of status namely a white shirt, black cravat and black velvet jacket and under this a silk waistcoat in the Clan Gordon tartan.
 
Wiscombe Park is a 19th-century Gothic country house in Southleigh Devon which stands in parkland some 3 miles west of Colyton, The house is a grade II* listed building.The parkland now hosts the 1000 yard (914 metre) Wiscombe Park Hillclimb course.
 
Wiscombe belonged in medieval times to Otterton Priory and was granted in the reign of Henry VIII to Sir William Bonville, in whose time the Park was stocked with deer. It then passed to the Marquis of Dorset, later the Duke of Suffolk, after whose attainder it passed fi...
