Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Robert Morden was a prominent English cartographer and publisher who created a series of county maps in the late 17th century, notably published in Edmund Gibsons 1695 edition of Camdens Britannia. These maps featured early geographical delineations, regional boundaries, and decorative cartouches characteristic of late Stuart cartography.

Maps from this era were typically printed via copperplate engraving onto handmade rag paper. The engraved monochrome lines were often finished by hand with watercolour washes to highlight county divisions, rivers, and coastline details.

Authentic maps display an impression mark along the border left by the copper printing plate, alongside characteristic chain lines and watermarks in the handmade paper. Original period fonts, cartouche engraving styles, and hand-applied coloured borders further distinguish genuine period prints from modern reproductions.

An antique map works effectively as a focal point when positioned above a sideboard, writing desk, or mantelpiece. Pairing the piece with dark wood furniture, brass accents, or structured gallery walls creates a cohesive traditional aesthetic.

Display the framed map away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing of the rag paper. Utilize acid-free backing materials and UV-protective glass to ensure long-term preservation of the paper and watercolour tints.
