Kibori Kuma are traditional hand-carved wooden bear sculptures that originated in Hokkaido, Japan, during the early twentieth century. Initially developed as a cottage industry to provide winter income for rural farmers and Ainu artisans, these carvings grew into an iconic form of Japanese folk art.

These sculptures are typically carved from single blocks of native Japanese hardwoods, such as linden or pine. Artisans finish the carved timber using gouges and chisels to create texture, followed by dark wood stains or natural polishes to accentuate the grain and fur details.
