Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century painted pine chest is a utilitarian storage vessel constructed from pine timber and finished with decorative paintwork or faux graining. These chests were commonly manufactured throughout the Victorian era as accessible, functional storage for textiles, bedding, and domestic items.

Victorian pine chests were typically crafted from solid pine or deal boards connected with hand-cut dovetail or butt joints. The surfaces were often finished with scumble glaze techniques to imitate mahogany or walnut, supplemented by iron side drop handles, brass escutcheons, and turned wooden feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period woodworking, including hand-planed interior boards, irregular dovetails, and period-correct iron hardware. The painted surface should display natural craquelure, authentic edge wear, and historical patina consistent with age and regular use rather than artificial distressing.

An antique painted chest can serve as a functional coffee table, a storage bench at the foot of a bed, or an accent piece in a hallway. The warm timber tones and painted pattern provide visual texture that complements both rustic country settings and minimalist contemporary schemes.

Maintain the painted finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, solvent-based polishes, and water, applying a light coat of clear beeswax paste occasionally to protect the original paint layer and timber surface.
